Ruaha River Lodge is located in the Ruaha National Park, which is a place with a dramatic topography of mountains, river and plains, with its only rugged beauty only outmatched by the variety and density of wildlife and bird life.
Game is drawn to the river from the neighbouring hills and you can witness the great wildlife dramas unfold from the comfort and protection of your self-contained natural stone and thatch 'Banda'. For a relaxing day you can stay sitting on the veranda of your Africa lodging with a cold drink and wait for the game to come to you.
Imagine that in the soft light of dawn, while the bush around you comes alive with birdsong, you enjoy a steaming mug of locally grown coffee, before setting off with an armed ranger and your guide to interpret the fresh animal spoor and wonder at the flora and fauna that normally go unnoticed by untrained eyes.
As you tiptoe through the bush your senses are acutely attuned to the strong smells of the African wilderness and the close presence of game with amplified sounds of vegetation crunching underfoot, animals crashing through the bush nearby, and Impala snorting in alarm.
Finally you come across a Hippo pool where under a shady tree a table is laid and your breakfast is being cooked over a log fire, an unforgettable way to start the day.
The best time for game viewing on this African safari is during the dry season from June until December when wildlife converges on the dwindling water resources. This is also the coolest time of year with temperatures starting to rise from September onwards.
During the rains from December until April, the tress erupts into a bursting torrent. Although the game viewing becomes more difficult the bird population swells with both northern and southern migratory species visiting Ruaha.
